For the third year running, the Architects’ Association —in conjunction with Barcelona City Council, the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, Barcelona Building Construmat and ArquinFAD– are organizing Architecture Week, which takes place between 9 and 19 May 2019.
With this new edition, and with the collaboration of the Barcelona Education Consortium, we will be bringing architecture to the city’s primary and secondary schools. We will be holding a series of workshops and talks, given by architects during school hours, so the students can observe, consider and follow the thread of the architecture in their immediate surroundings.
The idea is to give children a fresh perspective of the spaces that surround us, inspire us, foster relationships and generate dynamics of inclusion, looking at them as an expression of the civilization and culture of our times.
Would you like to get involved?
If you’re an architect or architectural student, you can take part by giving one of the workshops or talks. You have time to present your proposal until 15 January by completing the following form.
Planned themes
The activity will be based on three main concepts–body, habitat and territory–which will be explored transversally through a choice of themes:
· Modern architecture, with a focus on built architectural features close to the school, to explore the historical legacy of our city in greater depth while also evaluating it.
· Architecture today, focusing on projects to renovate and improve existing buildings, with an emphasis on energy efficiency and public health.
· Public spaces, in collaboration with neighbourhood associations, with a focus on spaces that citizens have won back thanks to neighbourhood campaigns.
· Inclusive cities: cities for everyone, given by third sector organizations, with an emphasis on universal design and how architecture can help to break down barriers and enable people to live independently.
· Local architecture, visiting architectural practices close to the schools.
